What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a disorder related to the health of the optic nerve. This nerve looks like a cable at the back of your eye. It is involved in sending images to your brain and helping you see. Research related to the exact causes of glaucoma are still ongoing. Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is the main contributing factor for glaucoma.

Normally, liquid at the front of your eye should circulate through a channel that looks a lot like mesh. Pressure in the eye builds up when the liquid does not circulate correctly. It is this increased pressure that is the main cause of glaucoma, although not a lot is known about what causes the IOP. It is strongly associated with a family history of the disease. Other contributing factors include:

• Injury to the eye
• Diabetes
• Serious eye infection
• Problems related to blood vessels in the eyes

Glaucoma is a progressive disease. You are unlikely to experience any symptoms in the early stages, which is why it is important to have an eye exam every 1 or 2 years, especially if you have a family history of glaucoma or are over age 40. The condition tends to develop after age 40, but can and has affected people of all ages.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness. Most people first lose their peripheral vision as the disease progresses. If left untreated or if treatment is unsuccessful, it can lead to blindness in a few years. Fortunately, modern treatments slow the progression and have helped many people avoid blindness. Such treatments include laser procedures, surgical operations and topical eye drops.

Research has shown that marijuana lowers intraocular eye pressure. A landmark study from 1971 showed marijuana lowered IOP by as much as 25-30%, for 3-4 hours. In the years since, more studies have found that the chemical compounds known as cannabinoids in marijuana (THC and CBD are two of the most well-known cannabinoids) lower eye pressure.
