Earlier this week, Governor Ron Desantis signed into action Florida’s HB-387, or the Medical Use Of Marijuana bill, which will allow patients to renew their medical marijuana recommendation online through telehealth visits. The current process for medical marijuana renewal requires patients to visit their doctor or provider in person every 210 days. The goal is to simplify the process and remove undue burdens and barriers patients who need medical marijuana have in receiving renewal. It should be noted that the bill does not allow for new or first-time medical marijuana patients to receive their initial evaluation for medical marijuana qualification through a telehealth visit. They must go in person.
What Is Medical Marijuana?
Medical marijuana, known medically as cannabis, comes from the cannabis ruderalis plant. Medical marijuana, despite its reputation, has been a long-held therapeutic intervention within the medical community. Medical marijuana can help with a myriad of symptoms and disorders. For example, it can help with:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Aid with appetite-suppressing diseases and disorders, from cancer treatments to eating disorders
- Pain mitigation from a variety of sources such as chronic illnesses and acute pains
- Epilepsy
- Glaucoma
- Mental health conditions such as PTSD
- Nausea
- And more
Consult a local provider or your doctor to see how medical marijuana can help you.
How Does Medical Marijuana Work?
Medical marijuana has two active ingredients: Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is the main component of the medical relief users report feeling as it binds to receptors involved in appetite, memory, movement, and pain. CBD can help reduce anxiety, relax the body, reduce inflammation, and a host of other medical benefits.
THC is the ingredient associated with the “high” users report feeling and, though also a cannabinoid like CBD, THC is less associated with pain management and medical treatment than CBD; though, it should be noted, that THC may have necessary psychological impacts that can aid the medical treatment associated with medical marijuana.
